Grim Fandango is a graphic adventure developed by Lucas Arts in 1998. Grim Fandango is a milestone in the world of graphic adventures. Inspired by the films of the thirties, it is full of that irony typical of the adventures of Lucas Arts; the settings are very suggestive and the characters you meet during the game are characterized in an excellent way.
Manuel Calavera (Manny to his friends) is a very nice skeleton in a suit and tie with a slight Spanish accent and employee of the Death Department of El Midollo, a city in the Land of the Dead.
His job consists of selling souls "travel packages" to the land of Eternal Rest (one-way ticket) which vary, depending on their conduct in life, from the simple walking stick (with a useful built-in compass) up to the mythical and unattainable Number Nine (a train that takes only four minutes to reach its destination). The more prestigious the trip he manages to sell, the sooner Manny will be able to abandon the world of the dead.
But Manny is not the only one doing this job, even in the Land of the Dead there is fierce competition and in recent times the best customers are always the prerogative of a certain Domino who in one way or another always arrives before our Manny, who has to settle for second choice customers.
But it won't take long for Manny to realize that something isn't right and through a clever stratagem he finally manages to get ahead of Domino and have an apparently respectable client, the beautiful Mercedes Colomar, a girl who died prematurely and who in life had always behaved in a correct and exemplary manner.
The long-awaited ticket to Number Nine seems just a formality and Manny finally dreams of being free but not everything goes as planned, and the computer inexplicably assigns the most terrible, long and dangerous journey to the sweet girl.
It is at this point that Manny discovers a shady business in which Domino is involved and in the throes of remorse he embarks on a journey into the afterlife full of twists and turns, in search of the beautiful Mercedes to ensure that she manages to reach her destination safely.
In 2007 LucasArts published a new version of "Grim Fandango", identical in all respects to the 1998 version, but fully functional, without having to use any emulator, on current systems and computers.
