The Secret of Monkey Island

The young Guybrush Threepwood arrives on Mêlée Island with a very specific dream: to become a fearsome pirate. To be taken seriously by the local pirate leaders he must pass three tests, including duels, treasure hunts and a decidedly risky theft. The problem is that his enthusiasm far exceeds his experience, and no one on the island seems willing to make his life easy.

After the trials, Guybrush pursues LeChuck, who has kidnapped Elaine. Stan supplies a ship and an unhelpful crew sails with him to Monkey Island. Through forests, Herman Toothrot and a village, he seeks help against ghosts. Reaching the enemy ship reveals that the decisive encounter will take place back on Mêlée: the journey returns him to his starting point, with very different experience.

The ending

Elaine already has a plan to escape, which Guybrush complicates. Their confrontation with LeChuck moves through Mêlée and is settled with root beer. Guybrush and Elaine watch fireworks; some closing jokes depend on earlier choices. Victory ends the adventure without making its hero master of everything he tells us.

Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge

Guybrush is no longer the boy who just landed in Mêlée: now he has an adventure to tell and never misses an opportunity to remind everyone he meets. His new obsession is Big Whoop, a legendary treasure that promises to consecrate him among the great pirates. The search starts from Scabb Island, where the overbearing Largo LaGrande keeps the inhabitants under his control and makes it difficult to even leave the island.

Freeing Scabb from Largo lets his servant revive LeChuck using a piece of the pirate’s beard. Guybrush searches for four map fragments across Scabb, Booty and Phatt, involving Wally and meeting Elaine again. Captured by LeChuck, he escapes and reaches Dinky Island, where the entrance to the treasure leads to a much more personal confrontation.

The ending

Guybrush uses a voodoo doll against LeChuck underground. Suddenly they appear to be children in an amusement park. Little LeChuck’s final glance and Elaine waiting elsewhere prevent a secure, single explanation. The ending is deliberately ambiguous: later interpretations and sequels should not be presented as something this game conclusively demonstrates.

The Curse of Monkey Island

Adrift in the middle of the sea, Guybrush reaches Plunder Island just as Elaine Marley faces a new attack from LeChuck. The reunion seems like an opportunity to leave the troubles behind, but a ring chosen too lightly unleashes a voodoo curse: our hero's romantic gesture becomes the beginning of another emergency.

After destroying LeChuck’s ship, Guybrush accidentally curses Elaine with a ring. He must recover her stolen golden statue, recruit a crew and reach Blood Island. An innkeeping family, smugglers and hazardous crossings stand between him and a ring with a suitable diamond. Saving Elaine does not finish the voyage: LeChuck takes them to his park to impose a different ending.

The ending

Guybrush frees Elaine, but at Big Whoop he is turned into a child. Restored to adulthood, he confronts LeChuck inside the attraction and triggers an explosion that buries the villain in ice. Guybrush and Elaine can marry. The park reinterprets the previous chapter within a new story; it does not erase the ambiguity experienced in 1991.

Escape from Monkey Island

Guybrush and Elaine return to Mêlée Island after their honeymoon and find a welcome that is anything but festive. Elaine has been declared dead, her position as governor is in jeopardy, and even their home is at risk of disappearing. Reestablishing the truth seems like a simple formality, until Guybrush discovers how stubborn the Caribbean authorities can be.

While Elaine works to regain her position, Guybrush investigates a robbery accusation. Ozzie Mandrill seeks the Ultimate Insult to dominate pirates; Charles L. Charles conceals LeChuck’s return. The trail crosses Lucre and Jambalaya before Monkey Island, where Herman Toothrot, Monkey Kombat and the Marley family’s past become entangled with Ozzie’s weapon.

The ending

Herman regains his memory as H. T. Marley, Elaine’s grandfather. Ozzie controls a gigantic LeChuck with the Ultimate Insult, and Guybrush challenges them in a monkey robot. Repeated draws enrage LeChuck, who crushes Ozzie and destroys the weapon, causing an explosion. Marley’s return also settles the island’s governorship.

Tales of Monkey Island

Guybrush Threepwood would like to put an end to LeChuck's threat once and for all. But in the Caribbean even the most heroic plans can take a disastrous turn: during a new clash with his enemy, our fearsome pirate inadvertently causes the spread of a voodoo curse. The contagion threatens the inhabitants of the archipelago and transforms a much desired victory into the beginning of a new problem.

The cure leads from Flotsam through Jerkbait and a giant manatee in pursuit of La Esponja Grande. Morgan, de Singe and a seemingly human LeChuck have conflicting interests. A return to Flotsam brings a trial; curing the pox does not end the deception. The fourth episode overturns the situation and the fifth crosses the boundary between life and death.

The ending

LeChuck reveals his plan and kills Guybrush. In the final episode Guybrush crosses the afterlife, seeks his body and confronts the villain with Elaine and Morgan. After the battle, the bond represented by his ring brings him back to Elaine. A post-credits exchange between Morgan and the Voodoo Lady leaves some intentions unresolved.

Return to Monkey Island

The Secret of Monkey Island continues to appeal. Guybrush, now a pirate with many adventures to tell, has not abandoned the desire to reveal it and returns to look for a way to the island. The starting point is Mêlée Island, a familiar place that preserves old memories but also reserves several surprises.

Disguised aboard LeChuck’s ship, Guybrush wins the crew’s support and reaches Monkey Island. A map sends him back to Mêlée, where the Secret is linked to a safe and five keys across the archipelago. Brrr Muda, Terror Island and other destinations broaden the hunt, while Elaine notices its cost. The race ultimately leads beneath the monkey head.

The ending

The last door reveals the machinery of a pirate attraction, with figures and lights to switch off. A chest can reveal a T-shirt claiming discovery of the Secret. The story returns to Guybrush and his son Boybrush; choices and replies allow different closing nuances. After the credits a letter from the creators appears in the Scrapbook. The ending leaves room to consider the answer and the value of the journey separately.
