Dated diary: the announcements and technical information collected here refer to the years indicated, not to the current situation.

-04.04.2013 Videogames, Disney closes LucasArts! Stop production. Just five months after the billion-dollar acquisition. Production of games suspended, including Star Wars 1313. A piece of history that is disappearing?

Walt Disney closes LucasArts, the video game publishing company founded by director George Lucas, and halts production of all new releases, including the announced and highly anticipated Star Wars 1313, due out later this year, and Star Wars: First Assault. The announcement was made Miles Perkins, a spokesperson for Lucasfilm.
LucasArts, founded 31 years ago, was acquired last October by Disney together with the film company of the same name. The cost of the operation was 4 billion dollars. The closure of the company will also lead to the loss of an unspecified number of jobs (according to the Kotaku.com website at least 150 people), while a "small team" will remain due to partnership issues, Perkins explained. The characters and stories will be outsourced to other developers, although the source cited by Kotaku even considers this hypothesis unlikely.
LucasArts had become famous throughout the world for the production of graphic adventures such as The Secret of Monkey Island (and the related series), the Indiana Jones PC saga, those based on flight simulators (the accurate historical trilogy Battlehawks 1942, Their Finest Hour: The Battle of Britain and Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe) and the first 3D attempts (Grim Fandango). At the beginning of the nineties the first Star Wars games were born, with X-Wing, Dark Forces, and so on up to Star Wars: Battlefront, the most famous edition, based on the previous Battlehawks. The last game in the series was released in 2008, Star Wars: The Clone Wars (and there are also "little brothers" in the Lego version). Seven years later, fans of the series were waiting for 1313 with enthusiasm. At the very least the project will be postponed, probably outsourced.

- 10.08.2009 Monkey Island on iPhone."I'm Guybrush Threepwood and I want to be a pirate." Way back in 1990, this phrase went around the world, enthralling millions of gamers thanks to a point-and-click adventure of particular depth. A plot perhaps not innovative but full of twists and above all with a well-marked charge of irony was embellished by the fervent imagination of the LucasArts developers, who gave life to an authentic masterpiece of the genre. Today the American company has decided to revive that milestone, with a remake which - together with PC and Xbox 360 - also reaches the iPhone. The entire story has as its protagonist Guybrush Threepwood, an aspiring pirate who landed on Meleè Island full of hope and desire to do. At a certain point the story will change direction towards the classic chase of a phantasmagorical enemy, guilty of the kidnapping of the beauty of the moment and fleeing towards the mysterious Monkey Island, an island as unknown as it is fascinating. The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition for iPhone brings with it a few but juicy new features, starting from a complete graphic restyling and ending with the implementation of speech, unfortunately (or fortunately) totally in English; all passing from a gameplay system tending more towards a "drag-and-click" that points and click.
Updated back The pointing method is in fact perhaps the most controversial innovation included in this version for iPhone: the player is asked to drag a small round icon through the various parts of the scenario and select the desired area with a simple touch. Indeed, the solution adopted becomes too cumbersome and less intuitive compared to a more immediate direct tap in the interested place, and above all it risks becoming frustrating especially in the phases in which one is forced to act quickly, as happens for example in some key moments of the plot. Who doesn't remember the acrobatic passages of grog from one mug to another to free the caged Otis or the jump into the cannon as the useful shot towards Monkey Island is about to explode? The graphics leave behind the pixelated squares of the time in favor of a more refined high definition design very reminiscent of the style of cartoons: colorful and bright, The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition boasts a harmonious outline and at the same time really cared for especially with regards to both environmental and character details. Those who are nostalgic, on the other hand, will be able to play with the original version simply by swiping two fingers on the screen: in no time at all the scenario will transform into the original retrogame, with the menus completely in English and the exclusion of speech. The audio sector has been completely modernized with the aim of making the soundtrack as pleasant as possible but still remaining faithful to the original, always exceptional. The same treatment was given to speech, an absolute novelty regarding this episode of the Monkey Island series: the voices match perfectly with each character, even if to tell the truth Le Chuck could have deserved a more frightening and dark tone.

- 01.06.2009 It's official: Monkey Island will return to the gaming scene, with a remake of the first chapter in development at LucasArts studios.
Through the social network Twitter.com, LucasArts has confirmed that The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition will arrive on PC and Xbox Live Arcade on a date to be determined, presumably revealed during E3 2009 which will start tomorrow 2 June.
A revisitation of the original graphic adventure, the game will allow the new generation of gamers to discover the myth of Guybrush Threepwood in a product with entirely redesigned graphics, new dubbing and a new soundtrack.
LucasArts has also ensured that it has undertaken the development of an episodic version of the game, entrusted to the Telltale Games team (www.telltalegames.com/monkeyisland), but even in this case there are no details on the matter. More information via the official website of The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition: www.lucasarts.com/games/monkeyisland

- 26.05.2009 As always, there is little news on Monkey Island and yet... Even if it is still a rumor, which is however bouncing on web pages all over the world, the USK - i.e. the body that deals with the "PEGI" certifications of video games in Germany - seems to have leaked the announcement of a new game entitled "The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition", exclusively for Xbox 360.
There are no further details and therefore we do not know if it will be a mere conversion or a "revisited" version of the first legendary Monkey Island.
To find out more we will have to wait for E3 and therefore the beginning of June!

- 26.11.2007 Perhaps this news doesn't matter to many, but for fans of LucasArts and Sierra games this is amazing news! I can't help but report it.
Monkey Island, Indiana Jones, Day of the Tentacle and many other spectacular games will run only on the touchscreen system of the iPhone and iPod Touch!
What makes the operation of these dated software possible is the famous ScummVM, which allows you to run these games (both in Mac and PC versions), even on the latest Mac OSX Leopard operating system.
To install ScummVM on iPhone or iPod Touch, just follow a few simple steps:

  • Enter the Installer.app
  • Click “Sources”
  • Click “Add”
  • Enter http://urbanfanatics.com/scummvm.xml

ScummVm is now available in the “Games” folder.

- 01.08.2007 Without any particular fanfare or press release, LucasArts republished many of its historical adventures during 2007 in a collection called: "LucasArts Classic". The games are the same both from a graphic and audio point of view, same animations and same resolutions. What is new is its compatibility. In fact, the republished titles work perfectly, without the necessary use of any emulator, on all modern computers running Windows XP or Vista as an operating system. Truly an excellent idea to revive old myths! For now there are some in circulation, certainly at the FNAC and MediaWorld shopping centers:

  • Full Throttle (€9.90)
  • Sam & Max - Hit the road (€14.90)
  • The Dig (€9.90)
  • Monkey Island 2 + Indy Desk + ST (€25.50)
  • Curse of Monkey Island (€9.90)
  • Grim Fandango (€9.90)

The titles are completely in Italian and accompanied by a manual in pdf file also in Italian.
This is an event because in Italy we have not had reissues of Lucas titles since the time of the late CTO (who left us definitively in recent 2004, but who had not reprinted anything since the 90s). Even though the Lucas distributor for Italy had officially become Activision, there were strong rumors that the Italian rights had ended up in the grave together with the CTO. With these re-releases, we instead learn that the Italian rights (in part or in whole) have indeed passed to Activision Italia. In reality (leaving aside all the other re-editions, especially American ones) the LucasArts Classic Line appeared during 2006 in England and Spain, before extending in 2007 to Italy, Germany and Australia: therefore almost all the markets where Activision represents Lucas.
LucasArts and Activision have, hopefully for now, favored dubbed titles, evidently considered more marketable. But there are certainly other reasons too. In fact, the same Spanish case, if on the one hand confirms this hypothesis, on the other denies it: Fate of Atlantis actually exists there dubbed, but in English, and in any case a version with only subtitles was included in the re-edition. Even more inexplicable are the absences of The Dig in Germany (where it exists dubbed in German) and obviously of Fate of Atlantis in England. Monkey Island 4, if not present, is supposedly just experiencing delays. As stated in the "new" manuals, as stated in Italian, the contact person for Assistance is now Halifax. The publisher is, as mentioned above, Activision, distribution in Italy is, however, entrusted to Leader.

    • Full Throttle, The Dig, and Sam & Max (v2.0) have been made compatible with XP and Vista. They start directly from the CD and save in predefined system folders (indicated in the Readme). Also bootable with the ScummVM cross-platform emulator.

    • Curse of Monkey Island (v1.01) has a new installer for XP and Vista, but inexplicably it doesn't fix the old issues. Therefore the procedure remains unchanged: skip the request to install Directx 5 and set backward compatibility in the game executable. Also bootable with the ScummVM multiplatform emulator (see specific procedure in the program Readme).

    • Grim Fandango (v1.01) has a new installer for XP and Vista, and fixes the compatibility problem (except that the update restores the original executable). Therefore the procedure remains unchanged: install the official multilingual patch (not present on the disc, despite what is described in the Readme) and follow it with the LucasDelirium patch.

LucasArts Classic Line has several other titles. But, here, we have only discussed the graphic adventures.

- 12.06.2007 After years of silence, finally something new! This news appeared on the Multiplayer.it website: "In recent days, news has been spreading online of the possibility that a new chapter of the famous grotesque/pirate saga Monkey Island is in the works. This is a series of disconnected rumours, deriving from what appears to be an indiscretion leaked by some members of the staff working on the musical compositions of the game, but as Lucas Arts is working on a series of important projects, among which (so rumors) a title for Wii, the announcement of the fifth chapter of the series would be postponed to 2008. The rumors were somehow fueled by the publication of three artworks credited to Steve Purcell, which however would not be officially linked to a new pirate project, as it was logical to assume, completely denies such rumors but we, well, well... who wouldn't want to hope for it beyond all hope?
