在侮辱决斗、岛屿和橡皮鸡出现之前，先有等待填满的纸页。一个念头可以成为角色，一张图可以打开路线，一句笑话可以改变场景。这条时间线追踪的，是想象中的世界如何成为能够亲自游玩的冒险。
这里的“日记”指一段回望创作历程的编辑叙事，由 Monkey Island Site 根据文献与当事人回忆编写，并非 Ron Gilbert 本人撰写的日记。在他身旁，还有绘画、编程、作曲与测试的创作者。
1987年
海盗之前，是一座充满可能的宅邸
Maniac Mansion 于1987年推出。Gilbert 与 Gary Winnick 的游戏背后，是描述场景和动作的 SCUMM。无需重写每个技术细节就能尝试创意，也为 Monkey Island 的创作铺路。
酒吧与引擎
SCUMM 是 Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion 的缩写。它出现在海盗酒吧的招牌上，把开发工具的名字带进虚构世界。本站 SCUMM 专页继续讲述技术故事。

1980年代末
游乐设施、小说与海盗新手
在2004年发表的回忆里，Gilbert 区分了 Pirates of the Caribbean 游乐设施的氛围，以及 Tim Powers 小说 On Stranger Tides 的影响。项目曾因 Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade 暂搁，之后重启。Guybrush 的生涩让玩家能够与他一同学习。

著名的3a并不是完成的游戏
2022年 Gilbert 描述的是起始想法，而非放在抽屉里的完整第三部。不能把 Return 说成1992年剧本原封不动的迟来执行。创意是在工作中发展的。

笔记重新见到阳光
