The Secret of Monkey Island

Reports already collected on the site · 17 entries

Original collection, with repetitions and some misattributions removed. Items worded as tests to do do not necessarily describe an event available in every version.

  • After the brawl at Governor Marley's house, Guybrush is thrown into the water with a fabulous idol tied to his foot which prevents him from resurfacing. Guybrush can hold his breath for ten minutes, after which he will take on a disturbing green color. The game interface will replace the available actions with macabre and unusable ones.
  • On Monkey Island if you aim the catapult and sink YOUR ship you will see the alternate ending.
  • Inside the aforementioned Scumm Bar it is possible to have a chat... with the dog.
  • One of the customers always answers "hello" except when asked about "LOOM the new Lucas game...": from that moment a commercial starts.
  • Rummaging through the junk in Lady Voodoo's shop, it is possible to find a carpenter's cup.
  • When Fester Shinetop catches Guybrush in the act while he is stealing from the Governor's Mansion, holding the Many-Handed Idol, you can tell the sheriff that this object belongs in a museum, just like Indy in the movie "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade".
  • There is another reference to Indy3: in Voodoo Lady's shop: examining the chalice on top of the chest, Guy exclaims: "It looks like a carpenter's cup", the same phrase as Professor Jones while looking at the Holy Grail.
  • Meathook, after your numerous insults, will utter a sentence referring to the fact that the mother of the protagonist of Loom was a swan, thus ruining, in revenge, the ending of the other famous Lucas adventure.
  • When you are stunned by the cannon launch in the Fettuccini Brothers' circus, Guybrush says "I'm Bobbin, are you my mother?" this is a clear reference to Loom.
  • If you talk to the Voodoo Lady and press both mouse buttons at the same time, she will refuse to talk to you, telling you that you have no patience. (in fact, usually, by pressing the two mouse buttons you can skip some cutscenes in the game).
  • In the forest there is a hollow log: when Guybrush tries to enter it, the system displays the warning: "This point of the game is not accessible for the moment, to access it insert floppy 33-bis and press ALT-F13". But, given that there is no 33-bis disk in the Monkey Island distribution, after pressing any button Guybrush will give up playing that (non-existent) part of the game.
  • When Guybrush goes towards the mouth of the cannon of the ship "Sea Monkey", he says "Deja vu" (an action or situation that seems to have already been experienced), he does so because it reminds him of when he was launched from the Fettucini Brothers' cannon.
  • From a hill on Monkey Island (the one from which you can see your ship, in the distance) it is possible to fall "to your death". In fact, a screen is shown (not translated in the Italian version) which allows you to choose whether to end the game, "try again" (Guybrush will come back up saying "Wow... the rubber tree") or exit the game altogether. The sequence is clearly a parody of Sierra's adventures in which (contrary to Lucas's) the protagonist constantly ran the risk of dying by doing the wrong action or at least at the wrong time.
  • In front of the entrance to the cave labyrinth of Monkey Island, you can see a totem with the unmistakable shape of the rabbit Max.
  • Throughout the first Monkey there are references to Treasure Island, Stevenson's novel. Just think of Herman Toothrot (who looks like Ben Gunn), or the elusive fort...
  • If you fight the Sword Master and immediately challenge a pirate, you will be able to use Carla's insults, ensuring victory but provoking protests from your challenger.
  • If you have played the fourth chapter of the saga, you will certainly remember Grandpa Marley's three Lawyers, on Lucre Island. In the first episode, from ten years earlier, you can notice a letter inside a bottle, on the beach near the Giant Monkey Head. The senders are indeed Grandpa's Lawyers! The letter says: "To: Herman Toothrot - this is a historical error! The letter should have been addressed to Horatio Torquemada Marley, since the latter later took the name of Herman, alone, once a hermit on Monkey Island! The letter says: From: Yammer, Hem, and Haw, lawyers at law. Ref: Lawsuit against the cannibalistic tribe for the outrageous abandonment of your oars in a abyss. I think we have a case here. We can probably ask for emotional damages and possibly even punitive damages...". Here Guybrush pauses, saying, "Hmm. That sounds like Legalese. I don't think I can translate it all." In the Italian version of MI4 the Lawyers were renamed Scava, Azzecca and Stronca.

New discoveries and verifications

A sign designed by Tim Schafer

The sign advertising Hook Isle is the work of Tim Schafer: it was created as temporary graphics and remained in the game.

A dialogue that cannot be heard

There are still lines left in the Sea Monkey data that are excluded from the game. This is cut content, not a conversation to unlock during a normal game.

Bob and the leg that changes sides

When Bob turns around, his mirrored sprite also moves his wooden leg. A small effect of the reuse of the animation.

Monkey Island 2: LeChuck’s Revenge

Reports already collected on the site · 16 entries

Original collection, with repetitions and some misattributions removed. Items worded as tests to do do not necessarily describe an event available in every version.

  • Remember the navigator's head in the previous chapter? Well, on Scabb Island, in the Peninsula, you will discover that the poor unfortunate man had been a friend of Captain Dread, but had been taken prisoner by the Cannibals of Monkey Island and beheaded. Guybrush will then be able to say, "Hey, I think I met your friend."
  • On Phatt Island, by playing Roulette, you can also win, in Easy mode, a free ticket to the Fettuccini Brothers circus on Meleè Island, and, in Hard mode, a three-day holiday on Hook Island (Meathook Island).
  • When Guybrush changes Governor Phatt's book with his own, tearing some pages, he imitates Indiana Jones in one of his films: "Raiders of the Lost Ark". Also when Guybrush says, "I hate snakes," after the trip to LeChuck's crate, it's another reference to Indy.
  • When you dive to the ocean floor try to wait 10 minutes and as in the previous episode.......
  • In his coffin shop Stan displays one with the LucasArts logo.
  • Trying to open the telescope; Guybrush will say, "This isn't Monkey Island 1." He refers to when he himself, on Monkey Island, in MI1, had to open the telescope to take out the lens.
  • In LeChuck's torture chamber, Guybrush and Wally, suspended over a pool of bubbling acid, will slowly begin to descend into it, after waiting a few minutes.
  • In the Phatt Island Library, in order to get a book you will first have to get a temporary subscription. When the lady asks you for your home address, among the many choices, there is also "Via Piemonte 7/F": the address of the C.T.O. S.p.a. Italy, headquarters in 40069 Zola Predosa (BO), the house that distributed and still distributes the Monkey Island saga.
  • Here too there is a reference to Indiana Jones: right after using the dynamite on the big
  • Using the elevator in the Dinky Island dungeon brings you to a familiar screen from the first Monkey Island.
  • Talking to the fisherman located in the Phatt City pier, at a certain point the latter, who is smoking a pipe, will take a second one out of his pocket. Guybrush will notice, and you can make him say, "Where did you get that other pipe?" The fisherman will immediately change the subject. Little joke from Lucas.
  • At the beginning of the game, Guybrush will order a grog from the bartender on Scabb Island: "Shaken, not stirred", in true James Bond style (A martini shaken, not stirred)
  • Near the end, lost in the forests of Dinky Island, you can find a pay phone from which you can directly call the LucasArts hot line at 1-900-740-JEDI.
  • The Booty Island costume shop even has a bunny costume identical to Max.
  • The LucasArts symbol is present several times in the game: in a coffin at Stan's, and in a painting in the Phatt City Library near the secretary! Furthermore, still in the Library, in the filing cabinet you will find many books that refer to the previous episode, or other books written by Hal Barwood (the creator of the fabulous Indy4), and also by Ron Gilbert (see "Hey there!" by Captain Gilbert). Also present, at the letter R, is an author of numerous novels, mostly sentimental, named Melaine Leary, a clear anagram of Elaine Marley; this is probably due to her temporary disappointment in love with Guybrush.
  • Two clear references to the Star Wars trilogy are present in Monkey Island 2. When LeChuck, in the tunnel, at the end, says to Guybrush: "I... I'm your brother" and Guybrush replies: "Nooooooooo! This can't be true!" and LeChuck tells him: "Look inside yourself, Guybrush, you know it's true" is a very banal reference to Star Wars, episode V, "The Empire Strikes Back". The other scene, which was inspired by "Return of the Jedi", still concerns LeChuck, at the end of MI2, when he asks Guybrush to take off his mask; equal to Darth Vader and Luke towards the conclusion of episode VI.

New discoveries and verifications

Walt, but not Walt Disney

The prison dog is named after Steve Purcell's dog. The setting may recall the Disney attraction, but the name does not prove a dedication to Walt Disney.

The ship's cornet

Test the ship's horn in different locations: Guybrush can use it even when it doesn't serve the puzzle, resulting in unenthusiastic comments.

The Voodoo Lady's bottles

In the voodoo shop, looking at and trying to take the bottles allows you to hear different answers.

  • In the theater, Juliet's voice actor has a pink dress, and Guybrush says, "I would never dress like that." But in MI2 he was dressed up like this at Governor Marley's Carnival Party!
  • Have you ever heard of the Dominque barber? No hairdresser in Plunder is called that. If you talk to Van Helgen, however, he will tell you that Dominique was a tenor who was part of their quartet and who then left the profession. In Monkey 1, when the map dealer asks you if you have a cousin named Sven, Guybrush can reply, "No, but I had a barber named Dominique."
  • Another thing about that conversation with LeChuck is when the Demon talks about young Lindy, the cabin boy, who died because he shot himself from the cannon without a helmet; Guybrush will say: "No one can be that desperate", also because in Monkey 1 he shot himself with his helmet TWICE...
  • The recipe book is almost entirely a reference to Monkey 2, as there are all the drink recipes from the Bloody Lip & Grill Bar, including the "Sput and Tonic".
  • Towards the end of the game it is possible to find a doll resembling the usual rabbit Max in the Smugglers' hideout on Skull Island.
  • There is a dummy control for enabling 3D graphics acceleration in the menu. Attempting to activate it, the interface responds "It was a joke.", the second time "No, seriously, there is no 3D acceleration in this game." while from the third attempt onwards he will cut it short with a dry "You can click as much as you want, but it won't do any good."
  • On Blood Island, on the beach of the Flying Gallese, if you order Guybrush to "take" sea water 26 times in a row, you find yourself in The secret of Monkey Island, and the character sees himself dead underwater.
  • In Puerto Pollo, in Barbagialla's restaurant, after taking the knife away from the customer, a button falls on which is written "Ask me about Grim Fandango". The customer is Manny Calavera, protagonist of Grim Fandango.
  • In the second episode, Guybrush gets the cook of the Bloody Lip & Grill Bar fired, by inserting a mouse into the Vichyssoise recipe... Well, in Monkey3, discussing with Griswold Goodsoup, asking him what the show he presented was about, when Blood Island was full of tourists, the good hotelier will answer: "The culinary inventions of a chef not well liked by Parisian haute cuisine for his innovative way of cooking the Vichyssoise...". A hidden reference to the recipe "invented" by Guybrusyh.
  • In The Curse of Monkey Island, a portrait of Max can be found in the Barbery, hidden behind that of Edward Van Helgen.

Guybrush replies, "Let me guess: they set you up, didn't they?" and Otis, amazed: "Yes, how do you know?" and he, finally: "Intuition". This refers to MI1, in Melèe Island prison, when Guybrush first met him, who said he was innocent, a victim of society, a victim of a conspiracy.

Return to Monkey Island

New discoveries and verifications

Cogg Island

In Part IV, look for the quiz card that asks where Cogg Island is. The answer with the coordinates indicates where to sail and dive: the coordinates vary. Save first, because from that area you don't normally return to the surface.

The cover pirates

Three characters from Steve Purcell's original cover appear in the adventure. The callout also includes a detail of the artist's signature.

Cobb did not change the subject

The Loom promotion returns to the SCUMM Bar. Skipping his speech may result in an alternate version of the presentation being heard.

Conrad's leg

The museum curator has a mirrored animation that changes side to leg and writing on his shirt: a visual callback to Bob from the first game.

A manatee in the tale

In the Chums stories it is possible to mention a manatee, making Conrad react: a small bridge with the imagery of Tales.
