All games in the series are set in a fanciful archipelago in the Caribbean. The historical period can be traced back to the Golden Age of Piracy but deliberately very vague (although in the third game one coin reads 1687). The islands are inhabited by pirates dressed much more similar to the films and comics than to the costume of the time, and there are many deliberate anachronisms and references to contemporary culture.
The main setting however remains the Archipelago of the Three Islands. Since the first game in the series, "The Secret of Monkey Island", each game has at least a mention of Monkey Island, while introducing new islands to explore. In "Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge" four new islands are introduced, while "The Curse of Monkey Island" adds three, while "Escape from Monkey Island", in which some old islands are revisited, still introduces three new islands.
The main islands of the archipelago are Mêlée Island, Booty Island, and Plunder Island, all of which are under the administration of Governor Elaine Marley, who rules in place of her long-missing grandfather, Horatio Torquemada Marley. Elaine moves from one island to another at will, although she considers the one on Mêlée Island, the capital of the archipelago, to be the "governor's palace".
The other islands in the area are considered satellites of the Three Islands Archipelago, even if they do not fall under the jurisdiction of Elaine, they are

  • Pirate Islands: Scabb Island, Phatt Island, Melee Island
  • The urbanized ones: Lucre Island, Jambalaya Island
  • The smaller islands: Hook Island, Dinky Island, Skull Island, Knuttin Atoll
  • Volcanic Islands: Blood Island, Monkey Island

There are islands marked on the maps, but which cannot be visited in any game: Spittle and Pinchpenny.
