Your pirate meets Guybrush

In The Legend of Monkey Island you control your own Sea of Thieves pirate. Guybrush becomes someone to meet as you approach familiar buildings, read signs and discover well-known settings from another angle. The SCUMM Bar, Mêlée and Monkey Island gain depth and distances to travel.

Rare developed this official crossover in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games. Released between July and September 2023, its three adventures combine exploration, conversations, puzzles and action. They form a Sea of Thieves storyline alongside the six main Monkey Island games, rather than a remaster or a fan production.

Part of the pleasure lies in lingering where a single camera angle once sufficed: entering the tavern, recognising a character or viewing a familiar landscape from its other side. You control your movement directly instead of using a cursor to give Guybrush instructions.

The voyage reaches Monkey Island for its conclusion. We stop short of explaining its puzzles and final revelations.

Getting started

All three Tall Tales are included in Sea of Thieves without a separate expansion purchase. Access to the base game is required: this is not a standalone free game. Check the requirements and conditions of your chosen platform edition.

  1. Install and update Sea of Thieves, with an Internet connection and the account your platform requires. Solo play still takes place online.
  2. Complete Maiden Voyage to learn sailing and controls. For a quieter visit, Safer Seas allows solo play or your own crew without other player crews.
  3. Find The Legend of Monkey Island among the Tall Tales. Consult your ship’s Quest Table selection or the book at Capsize Charters, following the game’s current directions.
  4. For story order, start with The Journey to Mêlée Island, followed by The Quest for Guybrush and The Lair of LeChuck. These are different from 2009’s Tales of Monkey Island.
  5. Progress uses checkpoints: check that you have reached one before leaving. Opening a menu does not create an offline pause.

Steam lists Italian interface and subtitles, with English voice acting. Menu labels may change with updates.
